In 2013 the Ministry of the Environment (MMA) created a Federative Joint Center for the Climate: Federal Climate Articulation Nucleus (NAFC) to address challenges related to GHG registries and state inventories in Brazil. A working group on National GHG Registry was then created to support the government to improve tools under the National Policy on Climate Change.
The Ministry of Finance and the Rio de Janeiro State are coordinating the Working Group on Registries, and WRI Brasil is supporting such initiative as part of an MOU between WRI, Ethos, and MMA. The main goals of the project are to develop technical recommendations to support federal bodies formulating a national bottom-up GHG registry proposal and to promote capacity building and training of government officials.
WRI Brasil is also focused on bringing international experience and best practices related to GHG registries, and translate these into useful insights for the Brazilian context.
